Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identified the rates of depression and the differences stress, sleep disturbance, health related quality of life (HRQOL) according to depressive level among nursing students.

Methods: This study recruited 304 nursing students. Students were interviewed by four instrument: Center for Epidemiology Studies depression scale (CES-D), stress questionnaire, sleep disturbance questionnaire, and 36-short form health survey (HRQOL). Depressive level was using the CES-D, 20 items, cut point of below 15 is normal group, cut point 16-24 is minor depressive group, above 25 is depressive group.

Results: 29.3% of the students were depressed, 30.6% were minor depressive group, and 40.1% were normal group. According to level of depression, students in the normal group were significantly lower stress, higher sleep quality and HRQOL than those in the minor depressive group. The differences in stress, in sleep quality, and in the HRQOL scores were present. There were clear differences in stress scores, in sleep quality scores, in the HRQOL scores according to level of depression.

Conclusion: Nursing student interact most directly and frequently with patients. Nursing educators should be interest to the emotional status among nursing students. Therefore they should screen for depression when they suspect it is real.
